Chapter 16: At the Border

"I'm Bellton Goldwood," the young man introduced himself to Falk and extended his hand.

"I greet you," Falk replied, trying not to show his nervousness.

"Please follow me. The king has asked me to take you to the border. We're leaving practically immediately," Bellton explained and he was already dashing through the wood-scented corridors of the huge fortress. It seemed that the people here couldn't walk slowly at all, and Falk tried to keep up.

"Have you flown a griffin before?" asked Bellton.

"Not a griffin but I’ve been flying just recently the first time," Falk nodded, concealing the fact that he had vowed never to do such a thing again.

"It's a great experience, isn't it? You feel completely free, and I always feel like the whole country is at my feet!" Bellton raved about flying as if he couldn't imagine anything better. Falk liked to believe that the boy enjoyed it immensely. But that didn't change the fact that he had a queasy feeling.

After a few minutes they reached the griffin stables, which were not much different from horse stables. The only difference was that the stalls contained huge birds of prey, animals with lion-like bodies, the head of a bird of prey, a powerful, pointed beak, large ears and with the wings of a proud eagle. Each of the animals appeared strong and alert. They were proud animals and their eyes sparkled with intelligence.

"That's Zephyr!" said Bellton, stopping in front of one of the stalls. The animal inside was particularly large, possessed of a dark brown lion's body, and its eagle plumage was white and black. There were splashes of blood on its yellow beak.

"Are they carnivores?" asked Falk uncertainly.

"They are. But don't worry, they don't like human flesh."

At that, Zephyr launched into a screech that sounded to Falk like a clear denial of the assertion he had just made. Suddenly, another flight on an H'Nor didn't seem like a bad idea.

Bellton opened the gate and the griffin trudged out. He was not tethered. Nothing held him. The animal's eyes were fixed on Falk.

"I don't think he likes me."

"Zephyr doesn't like anyone in the beginning," Bellton explained. "But that's normal, and it wears off quickly. You'll make friends quickly. Come on, Zephyr! We're going to the border. And we'll take Falk Stormbearer with us."

The griffin didn't seem to like that.

Bellton fished a bloody bundle out of a bucket and tossed it to the griffin. The griffin snatched the morsel out of the air and gobbled it down almost in one piece. Then Bellton went outside, and the griffin followed him with its head held high.

Directly in front of the stables, there was a take-off and landing area for the griffins as well as a fenced-in area where they could make themselves comfortable on hay and straw.

"And he can carry both of us?" asked Falk.

"It's strong enough to carry three people," Bellton nodded. "Not for long distances, though." He saddled the animal with a special fabrication that had recesses ready for two riders.
